Race Report

With threatening sky's and an even more threatening weather report,
Chad and the guys at the newly expanded World of RC Parts got Thunder
Alley in EXCELLENT SHAPE for Saturday's RC Pro Dirt Oval Series
Thunder in Carolina. We got the show in through the efforts of the
hard working track crew. Unfortunately the weather didn't help our car
count. The radar said it was raining, but actually only a few
sprinkles made it to the ground and the crew took care of those. I was
on the track some during the dampest part of the day and I saw little
difference in the track condition. Bottom line......those of us stuck
it out and had some fun. And NO counting issues.

In Pro Sprint, young TQ Aron Crumpler took his Bullitproof Sprint to
the lead ahead of #2 David Dick. He lead to the very end when David
took over for the win. Hard luck for Hot Shoe Lee Jones. After putting
his latemodel aside with handling problems, he crashed his sprint in
the first qualifier and was a DNS for the main. Brian Dodsun managed a
third place finish.

Pro Latemodel was a FAST race. With handling issues solved TQ Lee
Jones took the lead on lap three from Chad Bunn and set sail. After
leading most of the race a late race incident took the podium away
from Jone and at the end #5 qualifier Steve Good took the win. He was
followed by Michael and Thomas Medlin.

In 4wd Latemodel Chris Bunn took the lead from TQ Eddie Nichols and
Robert Hicks on lap six. He lead up until three laps from the end when
Hicks took over for the win with Nichols close behind.

The big 1/8 Latemodels put on a good show. Ray Brinchek took the lead
early. He led up until lap 36 when TQ Jeff Dunn got by for the win.
They were followed one lap back by third place Ricky Waimwright

Pro Truck was a run away. TQ Gerry Moore led flag to flag with a
closely contested #2 spot three laps back. In the end George Johns
wrestled the spot away from Billy Tyree.

Good show............Fast Smooth track...........Excellent
competition. This was our first visit to New Red Hobbies in Ocala
Florida. Tom and Tom Jr. did an EXCELLENT job along with Mason to
prepare this super high bite Kitty Litter
surface........yes......Kitty Litter. This 90% clay surface provided
excellent tire wear and bite from top to bottom for both foam and
rubber tires. Ever see panther slicks traction roll a RC10 GT???? I
did several times. The reworked wider oval was very similar to Coopers
with a wider groove in the corners.
Larry Rarer was on his way to another flag to flag win in Pro Sprint
except for some mid race competition from the two Troys, Pirez and
Robinson. Larry broke away again for the last five laps to score the
win.
The two Troys along with Rarer were after it again in Pro Latemodel.
After a TQ run during the Qualifiers Troy Sr dnf'd on lap 15 after a
rough start. Rarer never made it higher than third, but Troy Robinson
pulled off the win and led the most laps followed by Artz Winton
barely one lap back.Pro Truck and Modified didn't have as many entries
as we expected and since both classes are truck based we ran them
together. Two races in one, but this group put on the real show. The
show was young 6 year old Bryce Carter. He was running a Modified and
driving like a Pro. He and his dad are exactly what we hope to see
more of in the future. Brand new father/son racers. Modified was won
by Wayne Markham closely followed by Pro Truck winner Pete Jackson.
Young Bryce finished 2nd in Modified and 5th overall.
The 1/8th and 1/10th Latemodels concluded the show with 1/8th being
won by Smitty Williamson, and 1/10 by SS owner Ronnie Setser followed
by TQ Eddie Emery.

I spoke with a number of Florida racers and got some Ideas for 2008
including combining the Truck based classes once again. Come by and
see me at Thunder Alley and we will kick some more ideas around.

Duel in the Desert Race Recap

Thu Apr 5, 2007 6:13PM

Our first divisional race for the season is now in the books. As usual, RC Sports Mania in Phoenix, thanks to Mike and Mac provided an excellent track and race program. Pro Sprint National Champion Billy Fisher dominated the class along with Chris Cramer in their Custom Works Cars. Most of the field were Spec Sprints that ran both classes. Jeremy Madrid, and Joe Doucette finished third and fourth with their BulletProof Red Head Spec cars.

Pro truck provided excellent racing as usual with number three qualifier Garland Potts pulling out the win over TQ Mac McHenry. The best racing of the night was in Spec Sprint. Number four qualifier Mike Lubanovich took the lead on lap nine and never looked back. Till then he shared the top spot with TQ Tyler Norton and a fast charging Jim Hock. At The end Joe Doucette finished a solid second and Norton was third.

The electric classes were dominated by James Rodriguez and Armond Deforest finishing one two in both Open Mod Sprint and EDM. Wes Fukashima wad third in sprint and Darin Deforest was third in EDM.

All in All a fun weekend. Next Up……..New Red Hobbies in Ocala Florida. This should be a good field of cars since we are running the day before the FDOS Series event
